I teach in Korea, yes. I'm technically certified in ESL, though by trade in the US, I am a photojournalist. I chose Korea almost strictly on the basis that it is the highest paying country I'm able to get a job in with my qualifications, and on the basis of its potential to advance my portfolio.

I'll have to check out the book. Personally, I can't stand Korea (and believe me, it's not from a lack of understanding the culture, if anything, it's from understanding it too well), and my sentiment is not at all uncommon among the other expats here (in fact, Korea has one of the highest turn-over rates for foreign teachers in the world), and so thus I am always intrigued when I see a positive account of it by a westerner.

Kimchi is certainly an acquired taste, though not one I have managed to acquire. I smell it *all day* at school, and then I smell it more when I come home to my apartment (it is eaten at every meal, and I can smell its rancid, fermenting stench through the vents in my apartment), so I am not a fan.

Don't mistake me for being totally negative, though. There are definitely some positive parts to the country, and I do write about them. The overwhelming presence of the negative just makes them difficult to find, at times. That, and, well, I'm not terribly happy being in a country where I am treated like some sort of leper.

Hi there Driftingfocus, thanks for your comments. So you teach in Korea? That must be fascinating. I recently read a book called Meeting Mr Kim by an Englishwoman called Jennifer Barclay who ended up travelling through South Korea - her comments about the welcome of most of the locals she came across were enlightening to say the least, not to mention the fascination of the temples and the food. Now I'm keen to try kimchi. Please feel free to add me to your blogroll and I hope you don't mind if I add you to mine... Hope you had a good Christmas and here's to 2009!

Hey there. I found your journal through wordpress's "random blog" button, and I find you and your posts quite interesting. I like your writing style and content, and we seem to have some common interests, plus we're both with Frenchmen. ;) Would you mind if I added you to my blogroll?

Hi Herve,

(really sorry-can't actually work out how to put accents on comments. I must ask someone about that!) Thanks for your comment. You made a very valid point so I have edited the About Moi accordingly. Thanks for letting me know. If you notice anything else that needs correcting, please tell me. I haven't had much time to write this week. That's the problem with blogging: it sucks up time like a really hungry vacuum cleaner.
Fingers crossed for this week...

Salut,

Hope things are well. Monsieur gave me your blog address and i think this is really cool! one thing reagrding the "About Moi" section, it does not say you live in London so people may not understand the sentence: geography, easier to maintain through frequent visits, etc ..if they think you are still based in KiwiLand.
THis is very interesting otherwise
See you soon, Hervé
